Vinyl and PVC are often used interchangeably despite being different from one another. They are both types of plastic; however, vinyl is not the same as PVC. The major difference lies in the chemical makeup. PVC stands for polyvinyl chloride, while vinyl consists of a radical of ethane that includes different ethylene compounds. Fencing can be referred to as Plastic, PVC, or Vinyl. It's best to look at the manufacturer's materials used because a lot of manufacturers use them in one category.

First-generation vinyl is usually referred to as Virgin Vinyl. It is made up of 100% vinyl. It tends to be easier to clean, offers more UV resistance, and produces longer-lasting colors. Recycled vinyl sounds better for the environment. However, the manufacturing process used to make the recycled plastic into a fence entails using fossil fuels and requires more work. Also, they usually contain higher amounts of phthalates which can be harmful to humans and animals.
